Android App (iOS possible) with your current code

Hey,

i've looked through your code base a bit and noticed you already have in in rust and react so it wouldn't be hard to implement a toolkit into Cargo that gives you an Android app and a Desktop app that's simply displaying your React App.

Technically speaking it's also possible to produce an iOS app with it but iOS always means xCode and xCode always means owning apple hardware -> This would mean buying a license and possibly hardware if you aren't a mac user.

The Framework I'm talking about is Tauri but there's a few more that'd do the same.

I wanted to open this as a discussion as this won't bloat your issue count and gives you the opportunity to address your thoughts about Apps and goals and because RYOT is already PWA enabled, to me personally I'd prefer an actual App ^^

I made a poll online ages ago (cant find the link) where i asked users if they prefer app or PWA. PWA won by a margin. Most arguments were "i can choose to install a PWA. not so with app". i agree with them.

What would you say are the benefits of an app?

I believe both are equally viable.

Long term it'd make it easier to support systems and easier to integrate additional functionality on end devices (Calendar integrations, Push notifications, Barcode Scanning, Fitness Tracking etc.) building that base early means easier feature implementation later.

Additionally offline features are more stable in an app, it might become easier to handle and use.

Especially the fitness tracker stuff might benefit from an App and the way using the Tracker "feels" to a user (Mostly UX)

The main idea behind the suggestion is that your codebase already allows for App rollout by integrating a rust framework.

I wasn't aware of the poll though so that for me would but this to a "more or less useless" pile.

One additional thing that might be interesting to you though:

An app in app stores creates visibility which is marketing and building a brand. Additionally Mobile Apps give opportunity to easily buy and pay a pro feature/license in an adequate space that doesn't annoy users. I'm currently using Tauri and mostly just wanted to share the tool to see if it's something useful for Ryot.

I have used Tauri before and I loved the DX. I havent kept up with it for quite some time but I am aware that they have made some tremendous improvements.

Right now, I am not really looking to work on an app. Nevertheless, thanks for the suggestion. I will definitely keep it in mind.

No worries. Fair enough. Maybe I'll find time and effort to help with some code though right now I have a lot on my plate too ^^

To boost morale: Ryot is great and I have recommended it to many people around me, I have yet to find someone who doesn't like it ;)

Just want to chime in and say I'd love (and prefer) an app over a PWA. Apps just run smoother in my experience, and I have noticed several devs move from a PWA only position to ditching the PWA and move to an App for more functionality and integration with the mobile OS.

The only reason i dont want to go for an app is because I am the only one working on this project. I simply dont have enough time to do it 😅
